BUTTER FLY VILLAGE
The Albatross is an exceptionally beautiful butterfly. Belonging to the family Pieridae, it is scientifically classified under the genus Appias. These butterflies are found abundantly across the Western Ghats of Kerala, particularly in the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Kottiyoor, and Kelakam forest regions of Kannur district.
Key Characteristics of the Albatross Butterfly
Coloration: Their wings are milky white, bordered with black margins. The underside of the wings occasionally displays subtle shades of light yellow or pale green.
Migration: They exhibit mass migratory behavior. The sight of thousands of these butterflies flying together in a single direction is spectacular, a phenomenon commonly observed in Kerala ahead of the northeast monsoon (Thulavarsham).
Mud-Puddling: Hundreds often congregate on moist soil along riverbanks to extract essential minerals and salts. These large mud-puddling clusters of Albatross butterflies are a frequent sight along riverbeds in Kelakam and Aralam.
Habitats: The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary hosts a substantial population. They are also widely seen along streams and riverbanks adjacent to the forest fringes of Kelakam and Kottiyoor.
